THE WATCHER

Keanu Reeves as the baddie…
PLOT
Joel is a former FBI agent who lets himself go after moving to a new town. He can’t handle the daily grind, especially since he had problems capturing a serial killer. The serial killer Griffin has followed Joel to Chicago and sends him pictures of his latest victim, who just happens to live in Joel’s building. Joel has no life, other than visiting his psychiatrist frequently and ignoring the real world. This leads Joel to get back involved in the case, in the hopes of tracking down the killer and ending the nightmare.
TRIVIA
The movie was actually *gasp* filmed in Chicago, where it was set.
Keanu Reeves signed up for The Watcher years before it was actually filmed and tried to drop out after he learned he’d only be paid scale and James Spader and Marissa Tomei would earn $1 million, but changed his mind and stayed on.
THOUGHTS
Believe it or not, I actually remember going to see this movie in the theaters with my then roommate Katy. We giggled through the whole movie in part because Reeves is such a terrible actor sometimes. I say “sometime” because I do occasionally like him as an actor. Seeing him as a serial killer though is completely ridiculous. He’s not the least bit scary and frankly, if he came after me, I’d just sit back and let him take me…er, catch me. The saddest part of all is that I actually own this movie! Don’t let me con you into thinking this is a terrible movie because it does have a few good points, like Spader who is perfectly cast as the retired FBI agent.
