28 WEEKS LATER

Not as good as the first movie.

THE PLOT

Don and Alice are living in a farmhouse with a group of other people, trying to escape the infection. When the infected get inside the house, Don shows his true colors by turning tail and running for his life. Weeks later (28, get it?) the infection has been quarantined and England is in the rebuilding process. Don now has a job running an apartment building and eagerly await’s the arrival of his children Tammy and Andy. He lies to the kids about their mom, making himself out to be the hero. Unfortunately they go back to their old house and discover that she’s still alive, albeit as an incubator for the virus. Alice infects Don, who goes on a rampage and infects other people. Now it’s up to the US troops in the city including Scarlet, Doyle and Flynn to protect the kids and get themselves out of the city.

FUN TRIVIA

Jeremy Renner who played Doyle in 28 Weeks Later also played the role of Jeffrey Dahmer in the straight to video release Dahmer.

THOUGHTS/OPINIONS

Let me clarify something, I loved 28 Days Later. I loved it so much in fact that I wrote about it for both my Religion and Film class and Philosophy and Film Class in college. Everyone that came into contact with me was told to run and see the first movie. When I heard they were making a sequel, I had no desire to see it and was disappointed when I finally did. Then I watched the movie a few months later and found that it wasn’t as bad as I originally thought.

There are some nice kills in this movie plus a fair amount of blood and gore, more so than I saw or noticed the first time around. However I found the kids a little too annoying for my liking, to the point where I almost wish one of the infected would eat them. I still don’t like the inclusion of so many American actors in the movie, if only because the original didn’t need to rely on them.

I will say that this movie is good, though it took me multiple viewings to see the good parts in the movie.

I used 28 Days Later for a film class too. That first part where what’s-his-face wanders around a deserted London shows off some great examples of mise en scene. The sequel definitely wasn’t as great as the original, but I have the highest hopes for 28 Months Later.
